Evolution Works is a simulated world that allows students to learn evolutionary concepts through the process of discovery. The program contains an environment where student-created organisms can compete for survival and evolve over time.
I have included several lessons and group projects that can be implemented with the program. Some of the shorter demonstrations could be completed in less than fifteen minutes, while some of the group projects could span several days.
To get started, please read the
introduction first so you understand how to use the program. Then download the program and start playing with the
suggested lesson plans.
The program is entirely free for both personal and classroom use. If you use the program in your classroom, I encourage you to send me some feedback so I can improve the software.

If you double click the program or try to open it and it doesn't work, it is possible that you do not have java installed on your computer (this is more likely if you are running on an older machine).
To download java:
1) Go to
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
2) Click on "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3"
3) Download and install the program that is right for your system (MAC, Windows, Linux ... etc.)
4) Now you should be able to run Evolution Works by double clicking on it!
